           Knowing what to do with your money is only part of the picture. The other part is what is happening in your life while you are trying to do it.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

            You can sit through every workshop. Watch every video. Pull up every budget template. And still find yourself a month later wondering why nothing actually changed.  That is not a personal failure. It is what the research has been saying for a long time. Financial education on its own, with no support around it, has small effects on behavior.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Real change happens when financial knowledge meets the rest of someone's life — the housing, the mental health, the family pressure, the systems they are trying to navigate at the same time. That is why H2O does not run financial literacy as a side service.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We built it inside our case management work on purpose. Because adults do not live in single-issue lives, and the support has to match how the actual living happens.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What the Research Actually Shows
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            A 2024 systematic review published in Psychiatric Services looked at financial interventions for adults with behavioral health conditions and found that money-related programs produce stronger outcomes when they are integrated with broader support, not delivered in isolation.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A 2025 framework published by social work researchers went further, arguing that financial health is not just a social factor that affects behavioral health. It is part of behavioral health. The two are connected at the root.  What does that mean in plain terms? It means the stress of being behind on bills shows up in your body and your mind the same way trauma does. It affects sleep, mood, focus, relationships, and the ability to keep working toward a goal. It also means that learning how to budget is not enough on its own when someone is trying to budget while their housing is unstable, their mental health is unsupported, or their kids are in crisis.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The research on case management agrees. A long-running meta-analysis of mental health case management found that case management improves outcomes when it is integrated with other services and consistent over time. Case management is not just paperwork or check-ins. Done well, it is the thing that holds the rest of someone's plan together.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What That Looks Like in Real Life
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Take a real scenario. An adult signs up for a financial literacy workshop because she wants to fix her credit. She learns about utilization, payment history, and dispute letters. She leaves motivated.  Two weeks later, her hours get cut at work. Her car breaks down. Her mom needs help. She uses a credit card to keep the lights on. The credit score she was trying to build drops again. She blames herself and stops attending the workshop.  Now run the same scenario with a case manager involved. She still loses hours and her car still breaks down. But the case manager helps her access emergency assistance for the lights, points her to a community partner for the car, and works with her on how to keep her credit goals from collapsing under one bad month. She does not lose all the progress. She does not blame herself into quitting. She keeps building.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That is the difference between knowing what to do and being supported while you do it.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Why H2O Built It This Way

           That is why our financial literacy work, including programs like Credit Exposed facilitated by Shaniquea Jackson, sits inside the larger H2O ecosystem. The classes are open and free. The case management piece is what makes the learning translate into real life change. They are connected on purpose. This is also why we say financial wellness is mental wellness. Money is one of the most consistent stressors in adult life. When the money pressure goes down, the nervous system gets to rest. When the support is real, the learning has somewhere to land.

           Every April, the nation pauses to recognize Financial Literacy Month. But for the adults and families we serve at H2O, financial literacy is not a once-a-year conversation. It’s an everyday reality.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h6&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           Financial Literacy Month is a nationwide effort to promote financial education, supported by federal agencies, nonprofits, and community organizations across the country. The goal is not to turn everyone into a financial expert overnight. The goal is to help people build enough knowledge to make informed decisions about their money, their credit, and their futures.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That’s exactly what we do at H2O. Not just in April. Every day.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Numbers Tell the Story
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When we talk about financial literacy, we’re not talking about theory. We’re talking about real gaps that cost real people real money. Here’s what the most recent national data shows:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           U.S. adults correctly answer only about 49% of basic financial literacy questions
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;

      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            on national assessments. That number has not improved in almost a decade.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Nearly half of all American adults rate their own financial knowledge as a C or lower.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            That’s not a confidence issue. That’s a gap in access to real education.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           A lack of financial knowledge costs Americans an estimated $948 per person, per year
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            in avoidable fees, high-interest borrowing, missed savings, and late payments.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Financial literacy rates are significantly lower among Black and Hispanic Americans

            due to systemic barriers in access to financial education, not ability.

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           These are not just statistics. These are the people in our communities. Our neighbors. Our families. The adults who walk through our doors ready to do something different.

           Creating a plan that moves you forward

           , even if the steps are small, because progress is still progress

           That’s what we teach. That’s what our community needs. And that’s what Financial Literacy Month is really about.

           That’s not a lack of discipline. That’s what happens when pressure builds without the right tools or support.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           And for many people, credit is a big part of that pressure.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Your credit affects where you live, what you drive, the interest rates you pay, and sometimes even job opportunities. It touches more areas of your life than most people realize, yet most people were never taught how it actually works.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Here’s what matters:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ol&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;

            Payment history is the biggest factor in your credit score. Even one missed payment can drop your score significantly.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Credit utilization matters more than people think. Using more than about 30 percent of your available credit can lower your score, even if you’re making payments.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The average American carries nearly $7,900 in credit card debt. That’s not a personal failure. That’s a widespread reality.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Buy Now, Pay Later services like Afterpay and Klarna are now being reported to credit bureaus. On-time payments can help. Missed payments can hurt.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Medical debt under $500 is being removed from credit reports, which is a step forward for many people.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            New scoring models are starting to consider rent, utilities, and phone payments, which can help people build credit over time.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ol&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Knowing this is helpful. But knowing what to do with it is what actually changes your situation.

      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Credit Exposed is H2O’s free four-week financial literacy workshop designed to help people understand their credit and take real steps forward. Right now we’re in Week 2, and the class is already full, which says a lot about how needed this space is.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The workshop is led by credit literacy instructor Shaniquea Jackson, who brings real experience into the room. She’s not teaching theory. She’s teaching from lived understanding, and that changes how people connect to the information.

      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            They’re learning why paying bills on time is one of the most important habits for financial health.

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            They’re learning how to read their credit reports and understand what they’re looking at.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            They’re learning how balances and utilization impact their overall picture.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            And most importantly, they’re building plans that fit their real lives, not unrealistic expectations.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Each week builds on the last so participants can leave with clarity, confidence, and a starting point that makes sense for them.

           Shaniquea Jackson is a Credit Literacy Advocate and financial educator whose work lives at the intersection of knowledge and lived experience. She doesn't teach credit from a textbook. She teaches it from the perspective of someone who understands what it feels like to stare at a credit report and not know where to start.  That's exactly why H2O partnered with her.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           When we set out to build a financial literacy offering that matched the depth of our behavioral health services, we weren't looking for someone who could just explain APR and utilization ratios. We needed a facilitator who could sit in a room with people carrying real financial stress, real shame, and real questions, and make them feel like learning was possible.  Niq does that.

           Most financial literacy programs hand you a pamphlet and wish you luck. Credit Exposed is structured as a four-week series because real understanding takes repetition, reflection, and space to ask the questions you've been afraid to ask.  Each session builds on the last. Participants aren't just learning terms. They're building a framework for how money actually works in their lives, how credit decisions connect to housing, transportation, employment, and stability.  And here's what makes it H2O: we don't separate financial health from emotional health. They've never been separate. The anxiety that keeps someone from opening their mail is the same anxiety that affects their sleep, their parenting, their ability to show up fully at work. Financial avoidance is a stress response. Credit Exposed addresses the knowledge gap, but H2O holds the space for everything underneath it.

And for too many adults, the first time anyone sat them down and explained how a credit score actually works was after something already went wrong.  H2O exists to change that pattern. Not by shaming people into better choices, but by providing the education, support, and professional guidance that should have been available all along.  Credit Exposed, with Niq at the front of the room, is one of the most tangible ways we deliver on that mission.

            Research from Princeton and Harvard found that financial scarcity alone can reduce cognitive function by the equivalent of 13 IQ points.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Not because of ability. Because of bandwidth. The brain under financial stress is literally working with less. 
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That means a person juggling overdue bills is not just stressed. They are operating with fewer mental resources than they would on a calm Tuesday with money in the bank. Same brain. Same intelligence. Less access to it. That is not weakness. That is wiring.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           The Cycle Nobody Explains

All of it is predictable when someone is running on fumes.  The cycle does not break with discipline.  It breaks with clarity.

           What Breaks the Cycle

           The research is clear on this part too: when financial stress decreases, cognitive function bounces back. Not slowly. Quickly.  The moment someone moves from "I have no idea what is happening with my money" to "I can see what I am dealing with" — something unlocks. The chest loosens. The fog lifts. Options that were invisible ten minutes ago start to appear.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

Whether participants are pursuing entrepreneurship, improving personal credit knowledge, or simply seeking clarity, this upcoming offering reflects our belief that financial education is a vital tool for long-term empowerment.
